Set of two commemorative coins in 835‰ silver of the Republic of San Marino, minted in 1988 with legal tender status in San Marino and Italy. The 500 lire coin has a diameter of 29 mm and a weight of 11 grams, while the 1000 lire coin measures 31.4 mm in diameter and weighs 14.6 grams. Both celebrate the XV Winter Olympics of Calgary and the XXIV Olympics of Seoul, created from sketches by the artist Maurizio Soccorsi according to Regency Decree n. 23 of 1988. DESCRIPTION OF THE SUBJECTS
Obverse of the entire coinage: | Three Montl, traditional symbol of the Republic of San Marino, surmounted by towers and pens, are represented in a bold foreshortening, next to them is the Olympic tripod and at their base is the motto "LIBERTAS". below are the two oak and laurel trays that traditionally accompany the official coat of arms of the Republic. The legend & REPUBLIC OF SAN MARINO surrounds it all.
Reverse of the L. 500 coin: In the foreground there is the dynamic image of a skier. The composition is completed by the maple leaf, symbol of Canada and the five Olympic rings in the background.
Everything is surrounded by the legend "XV WINTER OLYMPICS CALGARY" and the value of the coin "L. 500 D.
•Reverse of the L. 1000 coin: In the foreground there is the figure of an athlete portrayed in the momentum of the dive. Behind him are | five Olympic rings hovering over the Korean symbol in the centre.
