NIMEI RING WHITE GOLD AUSTRALIAN PEARL AND DIAMONDS
Australian pearls are the largest cultured pearls in the world among all the cultured pearls that are marketed. The production areas where it is possible to grow pearls of such large dimensions are limited, which is why these pearls are extremely rare.
Australian pearls are produced by the Pinctada Maxima oyster and are cultivated between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, mainly in Australia, but also in the Philippines and Indonesia. Mainly the cultivations are extended between the northern coast of Australia and the southern coast of China. These waters are the natural habitat of the large Pinctada Maxima oyster. This oyster grows to a maximum size of 30 cm in diameter and can be nucleated with grafts much larger than those inserted in Akoya pearl cultivations.
There are several factors that contribute to Australian pearls reaching such large diameters. A first factor is precisely the size of the Pinctada Maxima oyster, another is the size of the nucleus that is inserted in the nucleation process, and again the period of time, usually several years, that the pearls are left in the oysters, and finally the production area, i.e. the environment in which the oysters are grown. The gonads, or reproductive glands, of Pinctada Maxima oysters are much larger than the gonads of Akoya oysters, and for this reason Pinctada Maxima is able to secrete nacre around the nucleus much more rapidly than Akoya oysters, especially in warm waters.
The waters of the southern seas are generally very clean and full of plankton, the preferred nourishment of the Pinctada Maxima. Clean waters and abundant food greatly favor the production of mother-of-pearl. The growth period of Australian pearls is longer than that of Akoya, Akoya pearls can be harvested after 9-16 months, while Australian pearls are harvested after a minimum of two years so that they have a sufficiently large size.
Australian pearls have characteristics that make them unique in the world: the satin luster that comes thanks to the rapid secretion of mother-of-pearl in the warm waters of the South Seas. Australian pearls have a slight variety of colors, generally white, silver and golden, which are rare colors in other pearl cultures.
