Ruby is the noblest single-crystalline variety of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), a mineral known as corundum, which is highly allochromatic. It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.

The Mohs scale is an empirical criterion for evaluating the hardness of materials. It takes its name from the German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, who created it in 1812. It takes as reference the hardness of ten minerals numbered progressively from 1 to 10, such that each one is capable of scratching the one that precedes it and is scratched by the one that follows it.

Ruby has a bright red colour, due to inclusions of chromium, but can take on various shades of this colour, ranging from the brightest red, also called "pigeon's blood", to pink.

The ancient Indians called it ruby ratnaraj, i.e. "the king of precious stones".
